The FORTIFIED Roof program gets a lot of attention in North Carolina — and for good reason. It's a legitimate program that produces genuinely stronger roofs. But there's a question most homeowners never think to ask: is FORTIFIED the only way to get a hurricane-strength roof?
At Happy Days Roofing, we've made a deliberate choice: we are not FORTIFIED certified installers. Instead, we install TAMKO's Titan XT, StormFighter Flex, and HailGuard™ shingles — products that already carry a 160 MPH wind warranty straight from the manufacturer. That's 30–50 MPH stronger than what most roofing manufacturers can offer, even with a FORTIFIED designation on top.
Here's why we made that call — and what it means for every homeowner we work with.
The standard wind warranty on most asphalt shingles is 110–130 MPH. That's the industry norm. It meets building code in most of NC, and for a typical thunderstorm or minor wind event, it's adequate.
But North Carolina isn't a typical state. Wilmington sits in one of the most active hurricane corridors on the East Coast. The Charlotte area and Piedmont regularly see straight-line winds and severe thunderstorm events. The Triangle gets hail. When a major storm rolls through, 110–130 MPH isn't a comfortable margin.
| Shingle / System | Wind Rating | Hail Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard asphalt shingle (industry average) | 110–130 MPH | Class 3 (some) | Meets code minimum; most brands |
| Standard shingle + FORTIFIED designation | 130 MPH | Varies | Sealed deck adds water protection; shingle wind rating unchanged |
| TAMKO Titan XT (Happy Days standard) | 160 MPH ✓ | Class 3 | Lifetime ltd. warranty; no certification required |
| TAMKO StormFighter Flex (Happy Days standard) | 160 MPH ✓ | Class 4 | Polymer-modified; superior flexibility in extreme temps |
| TAMKO HailGuard™ (Happy Days standard) | 160 MPH ✓ | Class 4 + Hail Warranty | Industry's first Hail Warranty; ImpactCore technology |
To be fair, the FORTIFIED program has real strengths. A sealed roof deck — the defining feature of FORTIFIED — prevents water intrusion even when shingles are blown off, which is the primary source of interior damage in most wind events. IBHS data shows FORTIFIED homes experience significantly fewer and less severe claims in hurricane conditions.
For homeowners on the Outer Banks or in coastal territories who qualify for the NC Strengthen Your Roof grant program, FORTIFIED can make financial sense — especially if the grant covers a significant portion of the upgrade cost.
But FORTIFIED comes with real complexity that most homeowners don't fully understand before they commit:
Our philosophy is simple: every homeowner deserves a hurricane-strength roof, not just the ones who navigate a grant program, find a certified evaluator, and remember to re-certify every five years.
When you work with Happy Days, we start with TAMKO's Titan XT, StormFighter Flex, or HailGuard™ — all rated to 160 MPH straight from the manufacturer. That's our baseline. No certification process. No re-evaluation fees. No 1099 at tax time. Just a roof that's engineered to handle what NC storms can throw at it, backed by some of the strongest manufacturer warranties in the industry.
As a TAMKO Platinum Pro contractor, we're also able to unlock the full warranty coverage that standard contractors can't offer — including enhanced labor warranties and extended coverage periods that protect you long after installation day.
TAMKO's flagship architectural shingle. 160 MPH wind warranty, Class 3 impact resistance, AnchorLock nailing zone for superior fastener hold, and a lifetime limited warranty. The workhorse of our lineup.
Polymer-modified asphalt construction gives StormFighter Flex superior flexibility in extreme temperature swings — critical for NC's hot summers and cold winters. 160 MPH wind rating, Class 4 impact resistance.
The industry's first asphalt shingle with an actual Hail Warranty. ImpactCore technology withstands more than twice the impact energy of a standard Class 4 test. 160 MPH wind rating. Best choice for hail-prone areas like the Triangle and Piedmont.
FORTIFIED is a good program for the right homeowner in the right location — particularly coastal NC homeowners who qualify for grant funding. But it's not the only path to a storm-resilient roof, and for most NC homeowners, it's not the most straightforward one. At Happy Days, we've built our entire product lineup around the belief that every homeowner — whether you're in Wilmington, Charlotte, or Raleigh — deserves a roof that starts at 160 MPH, backed by the strongest warranties available, installed by a TAMKO Platinum Pro team that stands behind every nail.
We'll walk you through the right TAMKO product for your home, your location, and your budget — no certification process required.
